Clothing in Islam is far more than a matter of personal style, it is an act of worship, a statement of identity, and a reflection of the believer’s relationship with Allah. The Quran addresses dress directly: “O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:26), reminding us that clothing itself is a gift and a mercy from Allah, not merely a practical necessity. The principle of covering the awrah, the parts of the body that must be concealed, is established for both men and women, with modesty (haya) named in the hadith as a central branch of faith: “Haya is part of faith” (Sahih al-Bukhari 24). The Prophet ﷺ himself was known for his attention to dress, he wore white when possible, stating “Wear white clothes, for they are the best of your clothes” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi) and he forbade arrogance in clothing, warning that “Whoever drags his garment out of pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection” (Bukhari and Muslim). Taken together, the Quran and Sunnah give us a complete framework: dress modestly, dress cleanly, dress with intention and let your clothing be a form of gratitude to the One who gave it to you.
